BTO Advances Tourism Growth with Diagnostic Mission on Environment and Sector Strategy. The Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) has taken a significant step toward shaping the future of the country’s tourism sector by engaging in a Diagnostic Mission for the development of a new Environment and Tourism Sector Strategy. The session brought together BTO Chief Executive Officer Ms. Keitumetse Setlang, management teams, consultant Dr. Sid Boubeker, and representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

Central to the discussions was the need for stronger destination marketing and sustainable funding mechanisms to ensure Botswana remains competitive in both regional and international markets. Delegates agreed that long-term financial sustainability is key to building a recognizable global presence for Botswana as a unique and attractive tourism destination.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of advancing the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) strategy, an area seen as vital for diversifying tourism offerings. By promoting Botswana as a hub for business events, stakeholders aim to encourage year-round activity beyond the traditional leisure tourism season.

Infrastructure development, improved visa facilitation, and enhanced air access were identified as critical enablers of growth. These factors are viewed as essential for improving visitor experience and accessibility, directly influencing the country’s competitiveness. Unlocking investment opportunities across the tourism value chain was also emphasized as a priority to attract both local and international partners.

The consultation further underscored the importance of continuous monitoring of tourism initiatives to ensure measurable progress and alignment with Botswana’s Vision 2036 and broader national development goals. For entrepreneurs and businesses, the mission signals a growing landscape of opportunities in the tourism sector, from investment in infrastructure and hospitality services to niche offerings aligned with sustainability and business tourism.
