Morupule Coal Mine Strengthens Industry Links with BIUST Engineering Students. Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing Botswana’s future engineers by engaging directly with students at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST). The engagement formed part of a lecture hosted by the BIUST IEEE Student Branch under the theme “Beyond the Books: Real-World Engineering in the Mining Industry.”

Delivering the lecture, MCM Divisional Engineer, Mr. Gilbert Bachopi, shared insights on what it takes to thrive in a rapidly evolving engineering and mining environment. He stressed that while academic performance provides a foundation, long-term success depends on adaptability, leadership, and resilience.

“Employers are looking for engineers who can adapt, lead, and stay resilient in the face of challenges,” said Bachopi. He reflected on his own career path, noting that diversifying skills beyond core engineering had given him a competitive advantage in the industry.

The session aimed to expose students to the realities of professional life and to highlight the importance of bridging the gap between academia and the workplace. IEEE BIUST Secretary General, Ms. Seetsele Kgakole, emphasised that such engagements provide inspiration and practical guidance. “These engagements are critical. They not only inspire students, but also give them clarity, industry networks, and practical insights into current trends,” she explained.
