Gaolathe Calls for Fast-Tracking Funded Projects to Boost Botswana’s Economic Growth. Botswana’s Vice President and Minister of Finance, Ndaba Gaolathe, has called for a pragmatic approach to accelerating economic growth by prioritising projects that can move forward without reliance on government funding. Speaking on submissions received for the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP), Gaolathe noted that among the many ideas submitted locally and internationally, several stand out as extraordinary in their potential impact.
“Some proposals do not even require government funding, exactly the kind of projects we were hoping for, especially in this time of tight public finances,” he said. His remarks emphasised the importance of leveraging private sector resources and reducing dependency on public funds, particularly during periods of constrained national budgets.
Gaolathe also stressed the need to remove unnecessary bureaucratic delays for projects that already have financing in place. “Let me be clear that there is no reason why a project that already has funding should be stalled by simple regulatory clearance. Our task is to design agreements and solutions that unlock such investments without delay,” he added.
For Botswana entrepreneurs and business leaders, this approach signals an opportunity to accelerate innovation and investment without waiting for government support. It also highlights the crucial role of efficient regulatory processes in creating a competitive business environment that attracts both local and international investors.
The BETP aims to diversify Botswana’s economy beyond traditional sectors, encouraging the development of projects that can generate sustainable growth, jobs, and global competitiveness. By facilitating faster approvals and supporting privately funded ventures, the government seeks to position the private sector as a primary driver of economic transformation.
This shift could open new opportunities for Botswana’s business community to lead high-impact initiatives and form partnerships that stimulate growth across multiple industries.
