Mabutsane District Council Enforces Hygiene Compliance in Sekoma and Khakhea. The Mabutsane District Council has extended its ongoing environmental health and food safety inspections to Sekoma and Khakhea, reinforcing its commitment to upholding public health standards across the district. The latest operations come on the heels of recent inspections in Mabutsane and form part of a wider initiative to ensure regulatory compliance among food-related businesses.

Environmental officers inspected a variety of premises, including takeaways, restaurants, general dealers, fresh produce stalls, and departmental stores. Several cases of non-compliance were discovered, resulting in the confiscation of unsafe food items, enforcement actions, and the issuance of penalties.

Among the most concerning violations was the preparation and storage of food in areas where pets were present, a practice deemed a high risk for contamination and disease transmission. In response, all unsafe food products were immediately removed and disposed of in line with public safety protocols.

One restaurant in Khakhea was suspended from operating following the discovery of serious health infractions. In addition, a number of businesses were penalised for not displaying valid operating licenses, a legal requirement for all commercial operations within the district.

The Council reiterated the importance of strict adherence to food safety laws and environmental hygiene regulations, urging all business owners to take proactive steps in maintaining clean, safe premises.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurs—especially those in the food and retail sectors—this ongoing enforcement drive serves as a timely reminder of the value of compliance, not only to avoid penalties but to build consumer trust and maintain sustainable operations.
