City Tour Buses to Launch in Gaborone as Botswana Expands Urban Tourism Offering. In a strategic move to diversify Botswana’s traditionally wildlife-focused tourism sector, the government is set to introduce city tour buses in Gaborone — with operations expected to begin within the next three weeks.

The announcement was made by Honourable Wynter Mmolotsi, who emphasized the need to broaden Botswana’s tourism product beyond game parks and nature reserves. “For too long, our tourism has been primarily wildlife-based. It’s time for both Batswana and international tourists to explore and appreciate the cultural, historical, and urban attractions within our cities,” he stated.

The city tours will spotlight destinations such as museums, monuments, botanical gardens, and the Gaborone Game Reserve, which is also set to undergo a major facelift. Plans are also underway to open a new game reserve in Francistown, further expanding tourism offerings in urban centres.

The tour buses will provide a structured and accessible way for tourists to explore city-based attractions, helping to stimulate interest in local culture and heritage while driving foot traffic to local businesses.

For Botswana entrepreneurs and SMEs — particularly those in hospitality, food services, arts and crafts, and transport — the move presents new economic opportunities. Increased city-based tourism could boost demand for locally made products, guided experiences, and other value-added services.

With urban tourism gaining traction worldwide, Gaborone’s city tours are expected to contribute not only to revenue generation but also to job creation and greater community involvement in the tourism value chain.
