Botswana Launches MIT-Backed Bootcamp to Boost Early-Stage Startups. Botswana’s ambition to become a hub for innovation-driven entrepreneurship gained momentum with the official launch of the Early-Stage Venture-Building Bootcamp, developed in collaboration with the MIT Kuo Sharper Center for Prosperity and Entrepreneurship.

Held at the Botswana Digital & Innovation Hub (BDIH), the launch marks the beginning of a 12-week initiative under the Botswana-MIT Kuo Sharper Center Collaboration Agreement. The programme aims to support local entrepreneurs in building viable, scalable ventures from the ground up.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Olesitse Masimega, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship, described the bootcamp as a “defining milestone” for Botswana’s startup ecosystem. He emphasised its role in helping founders gain critical skills, global insights, and access to networks that can accelerate their ideas into sustainable businesses.

The bootcamp attracted over 1,300 applications, with a curated group selected to take part in an intensive three-day in-person training. Participants will benefit from expert guidance provided by international facilitators, including Ms. Dina H. Sherif, Executive Director of the MIT Kuo Sharper Center.

Masimega praised the partnership for blending world-class entrepreneurship expertise with Botswana’s local talent and aspirations. He encouraged participants to fully embrace the opportunity, challenging conventional thinking and exploring innovative approaches to solving real-world challenges.

The Ministry reiterated its focus on entrepreneurship as a key driver of job creation and economic resilience. The bootcamp aligns with broader national goals to empower local entrepreneurs, particularly in early-stage venture development.

The programme’s launch signals a strong vote of confidence in Botswana’s ability to nurture homegrown solutions with regional and global relevance. As the bootcamp officially begins, it opens a new chapter for Botswana’s entrepreneurs to build, grow, and lead the next wave of innovation.
