YDF 2025/2026 Applications Set to Open: Youth Urged to Prepare Business Proposals. Young aspiring entrepreneurs across Botswana are being encouraged to prepare their business proposals ahead of the upcoming 2025/2026 application window for the Youth Development Fund (YDF). The Fund, a government initiative aimed at reducing youth unemployment, offers financial support to out-of-school, unemployed, and underemployed citizens aged 18 to 35.

According to the latest announcement, eligible applicants include individuals, youth partnerships, cooperatives, and legally registered businesses owned by Batswana youth. The funding categories are as follows:Startups: Maximum funding of P100,000, split between a 50% grant and a 50% interest-free loan.Youth industries/cooperatives: Up to P450,000, also structured as 50% grant and 50% interest-free loan.

Importantly, all projects must be conceptualised, initiated, and managed by the youth applicants themselves, who are expected to be fully involved in the day-to-day running of the business.

However, certain business types will not be considered for funding. These include alcohol-related ventures (bars, bottle stores, etc.), micro-lenders, nightclubs, and livestock speculation. Any businesses deemed unlawful under Botswana’s regulations are also excluded.

Applicants must demonstrate relevant skills or experience in their chosen sector. Where expertise is lacking, a clear plan must be presented showing how technical support will be sourced. Moreover, youth must show a willingness to consult experts and seek mentorship.

For Botswana’s emerging entrepreneurs, the YDF presents a timely opportunity to access startup capital and take business ideas from concept to reality. Interested applicants are urged to begin preparing now.
