Sandfire Projects Over P38 Billion Contribution to Botswana Economy Over 10 Years. Sandfire Resources Limited, the company behind the Motheo Copper Mine in Ghanzi, has announced plans to contribute nearly P38.2 billion to Botswana’s economy over the next decade.

Speaking during a presentation titled “Building a world-class copper asset from ground up: empowering communities and strengthening the local economy,” Sandfire’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Brendan Harris, outlined the company’s projected economic impact.

The estimated contribution will be driven by a combination of tax payments, royalties, and local procurement as the mining operation expands. Harris noted that in the past financial year alone, Sandfire contributed approximately P4.2 billion to Botswana’s economy as production activities increased.

Highlighting the company’s progress, Harris described the development of the Motheo Copper Mine as a major achievement, with current output reaching 5 million tonnes per annum. He stated that Motheo has become a key part of Sandfire’s operations and a significant success story within Botswana’s mining sector.

Looking ahead, Harris expressed optimism about global copper markets, indicating that demand for the mineral is expected to remain strong over the coming decade. He believes this outlook supports Sandfire’s long-term investment and economic participation in Botswana.

The Motheo project is one of the largest copper developments in the country, and its growing economic contribution reflects the scale of activity and the company’s local engagement through procurement and revenue contributions.
