“Luxury Problems, Not Crises”: Tech Entrepreneur Calls for Policy Reform in Botswana. Botswana’s policy environment came under fresh scrutiny this week as tech entrepreneur and public policy commentator Martin De Klerk Moatshe shared bold views on governance during an interview on Duma FM.

Moatshe asserted that most of the challenges facing the country are not natural occurrences but are instead “manufactured” by outdated or misaligned policies. According to him, Botswana is not grappling with systemic crises but rather with what he described as “luxury problems” — issues arising from inefficient policy design and implementation.

His remarks come at a time when several sectors in Botswana are calling for structural reforms to boost economic growth and public accountability. Moatshe emphasized the need for policies that are transparent, efficient, and better aligned with the country’s long-term development goals.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurial community, his comments strike a familiar chord. Many local business owners often cite red tape, inconsistent regulation, and limited access to resources as key obstacles to scaling their enterprises.

Moatshe’s call to action challenges both policymakers and private sector stakeholders to reimagine how policies are developed and enforced. He advocates for greater civic engagement, evidence-based planning, and a shift toward governance systems that prioritize inclusive growth.
