Authorities Warn Public Against Illegal Pyramid Schemes Amid Growing Concerns. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry has issued a renewed warning to the public about the dangers and illegality of participating in pyramid schemes, following a rise in complaints linked to misleading investment offers promising quick financial returns.

A pyramid scheme is defined by its structure: participants earn primarily through recruiting new members, rather than selling legitimate products or services. These schemes typically promise unusually high returns over short periods, and rely on constant recruitment to remain functional. However, once the pool of new recruits dries up, the scheme collapses, leaving late-stage participants at a loss.

In many cases, early participants receive significant payouts, not from any real business activity, but from the contributions of newer recruits. These early returns often lead to rapid word-of-mouth promotion, encouraging further participation without a clear understanding of the business model. Promoters of such schemes often remain secretive about operational details, and participants are usually required to pay a joining fee or make an upfront investment.

The Consumer Protection Act of 2018 explicitly prohibits pyramid and similar schemes. It states that any individual who “directly or indirectly promotes, or knowingly joins, enters or participates, or causes any other person to promote, join, enter or participate in a pyramid and related scheme commits an offence.”

The authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and perform due diligence before engaging in any investment opportunities. Members of the public are advised to be wary of guarantees of high returns with little to no risk, especially when tied to recruitment-based models.
