Botswana Responds to New U.S. Tariff Policy with Reassurance and Ongoing Consultations. The Government of Botswana has officially acknowledged the United States’ recent decision to implement a new international trade tariff policy, effective 9 April 2025. The announcement was made through a public statement issued by the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship on 7 April 2025.
According to the statement, the U.S. Government will introduce a 10% universal tariff on all imports entering the country. Additionally, approximately 60 countries with a significant trade surplus against the U.S. will face higher reciprocal tariffs under a new formula-based structure.
Botswana is among the countries impacted by this adjustment. As per the U.S. determination, a reciprocal tariff rate of 37% will be applied to Botswana, based on criteria defined by the American administration.
Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Hon. Tiroeaone Ntsima, assured the public and the business community that the Government of Botswana is engaging constructively with its U.S. counterparts. “We are committed to finding an amicable resolution to this matter through continued consultations,” the minister stated.
The ministry emphasized that further updates will be issued as discussions evolve and more information becomes available. While the new tariff structure may introduce economic implications, Botswana has reiterated its dedication to maintaining stable international trade relations and protecting the interests of its domestic business sector.
The Government continues to monitor the situation closely and encourages stakeholders to stay informed through official channels.
